Brick Vinyl

Heat transfer vinyl is a popular way to personalize various products and clothing items in a custom and special way. While many styles of vinyl are characteristically thinner to adhere to different types of heat-resistant material, not every project will need the same kind of vinyl. If your design is in need of a thicker material to really achieve the look you are going for, then you need to look into brick vinyl by Expressions Vinyl. With a distinctive thickness of 600 microns, brick vinyl is a great way to make your designs pop with a sturdy dimension and unique feel to it. This particular vinyl works the best when dealing with smaller logos or designs that need that extra height while still being able to remain flexible. When your typical flat vinyl is not working and your design seems to be falling flat, give it that extra dimension that it needs with brick vinyl.

What Brick Vinyl Options Are Available?

At Expressions Vinyl, we offer over seven different colors of high-quality brick vinyl to help add that special element to your creations. This vinyl comes in 12 by 20 heat transfer sheets and creates a nice semi-gloss look once it has been applied. The colors we have available in our brick vinyl sheets include: black, green, navy blue, red, yellow, fluorescent pink, and fluorescent yellow.

Our brick vinyl is also available in our sample kits as well. We try our best to display what each kind of vinyl looks like, but the most accurate way to see what these colors and textures look like in real life is by picking up one of our sample kits. Small (2 by 3 inch) samples of vinyl are bound together by a ring to show all seven colors of brick vinyl that you can choose from. Having a sample kit can help you determine which kind and color of vinyl will be best fit for your project.

Application Process

You can apply brick vinyl to your clothing or accessories by either an iron or a heat press. This vinyl can adhere to either 100% cotton, 100% uncoated polyester, or a cotton/polyester blend. This can include items such as bags, hats, shirts, and shoes - any cloth material that you want to add a fun, 3-D look to. Brick vinyl also looks particularly good when used as a left chest logo on shirts, sweatshirts or polos.

When using an iron to adhere you brick vinyl:

First be sure to cut your design out in reverse so it shows up the correct way on your item
Then use the iron setting between cotton and linen
Put your non-stick sheet over your design
Place on a solid surface to apply iron heat (not an ironing board)
Use firm pressure for 10 or 15 seconds on your design
Peel off the cover sheet after it has cooled off

When using a heat press to adhere your brick vinyl:

First be sure to cut your design out in reverse so it shows up the correct way on your item
Heat up the material beforehand for 2 or 3 seconds to remove any moisture or wrinkles
Set your heat press to 305 degrees Fahrenheit
Apply your design for 10 or 15 seconds
Peel off the cover sheet when it has cooled off

Washing Instructions

After your vinyl has been adhered to an article of clothing, pay close attention to how it needs to be washed - so as to not damage the vinyl design and maximize its durability and longevity. It is important to not machine wash your item for at least 24 hours after you have put your vinyl on. For brick vinyl, you can machine wash it but make sure to wash it warm water with mild soap. It is also not recommended to use a liquid fabric softener. Do not bleach or dry clean your article of clothing, because that can damage your vinyl design. Do not put it in the dryer - instead just hang dry it until it is completely dry. Check out the tag on your particular item as well to see if there are any specific washing instructions. Following these instructions will allow your design to keep looking its best for as long as possible.

Tips For Designing and Cutting with Brick Vinyl

With its unique thickness, your designing and cutting process will need to be a little different in order to accommodate the specific characteristics of brick vinyl. This vinyl is 6 to 8 times thicker than your traditional heat transfer vinyl and can make your prints and designs more noticeable on your projects. But in order to create your desired effect, there are considerations to keep in mind so that the outcome is what you are expecting.

Sharp Cutter Blade

With over 600 microns of thickness, you will need a good and sharp cutter blade to effectively slice through the thick material to get the quality lines in your design. You can use a metal file, sandpaper or aluminum foil to keep your blades sharp on whichever vinyl cutter you have.

Correct Cutter Settings

For each vinyl style, you will need to have your vinyl cutter on different settings to ensure the proper cuts are being made to produce the best quality design. When using a cricut cutter for brick vinyl, use a standard blade and have your cutter set to the cardstock light setting.

Layering Your Vinyl

There are many different kinds of vinyl that can be layered on top of each, but this is something to be aware of when using brick vinyl. Due to the expanding nature of this vinyl, you can use other vinyl to stack beneath it, but brick vinyl should always be on top to achieve the desired 3-D effect.

Open and Clear Design

A unique challenge with brick vinyl is being able to create a clear design that will show up effectively on your products. Being a thicker material, it is a bit more difficult to create an impactful design, so be sure to create an open concept design that will help your product turn out the way you intended.
