Applying the BlackBoard HTV

While the actual steps of applying the vinyl are not complicated, it is important that they are followed exactly. Carefully following the instructions will ensure that the vinyl sticks to the fabric correctly and will ensure that it will last a long time. The steps of the whole process include:

Choosing a Design

The first step of the process is planning out and choosing the design. This is where you can express yourself creatively, as you can choose the design and the project that you would like to make. After choosing the design, you will cut it out. In order to cut out the vinyl, you will need a cutting machine. You will want to make sure that the correct side of the vinyl is lying on the mat face down, and that you are making sure to mirror or reverse your image before you start to cut out the design.

Setting the Right Heat

The heat is essential when applying the vinyl to the fabric. It is so important to make sure that the heat is set at the correct temperature, so that it does not ruin the vinyl, or burn a hole through the material. BlackBoard HTV will only need a temperature of 275 degrees Fahrenheit to adhere to the material. However, it is good practice to look at the product description just to make sure that there is not a different temperature that is listed. This will help prevent accidental burns in either the vinyl itself, or in the material.

Preheat the Material

In order for the vinyl to really adhere to the material, it is important to make sure that the product where the vinyl is going to go is preheated. This will help smooth the fabric, as well as will release any moisture that may be in the material before adhering the vinyl to the material. 

Place the Design and Add Heat

After the material has been pressed and preheated, then you will be ready to place the vinyl to the material. It is important to know how much time the heat needs to be on the vinyl, because if it is not there long enough, the vinyl will not adhere properly. However, if the heat is on it for too long, then it could burn a hole in the vinyl or in the material. It is also important to know that there needs to be a lot of pressure on the vinyl, especially on the ends. This will prevent the vinyl from peeling in the future.

Once the time is up, you will remove the heat immediately. This helps make sure that there are no burns in the material or in the vinyl itself. Removing the heat from the product immediately will prevent the product from being ruined, as it lessens the chance that there will be any burns in the project.

Peeling Off the Cover Sheet

After the heat was applied and taken off, then you may be ready to peel the cover sheet from the vinyl. Once again, you will want to look at the product description to know exactly when the right time is to peel off the cover sheet. For some types of heat transfer vinyl, you can remove it almost immediately, but for other types, you need to wait for it to completely cool down before peeling it off.
