"Days Until" Countdown Board

"Days Until" Countdown Board

It's that time of year again where we are constantly counting down until the next big holiday! I love it! And so does my daughter. But she's only 5 so she doesn't fully grasp the concept of time. However, she can count quite well, so I decided to make a "days until" countdown board for our home.

My daughter loves counting down until the next holiday, plus she gets to practice writing her numbers every day with this cool new board.

You will need a wooden board, paint and/or stain, chalkboard vinyl and another light colored vinyl in the color of your choice.

If you look closely at my board, you can see that the edges are a little bit different. So I had to come up with a way to cut my chalkboard vinyl to mirror the edge of the odd-shaped board.

So I placed the chalkboard vinyl on top of the wood and pressed the vinyl around the edges of the board. This helped me be able to "see" the edge a little bit better.

Then using chalk, I was able to rub an outline of the board edge on the vinyl. I cut the vinyl, using plain old scissors, just inside the chalk line and got a great match for my odd shaped board!

Next I painted my board, sanded the edges and then applied a coat of stain to give my board a rustic look.

Now can I let you in on a little secret? I didn't use transfer tape to apply this vinyl. (gasp!) But I was really concerned about getting the edges lined up just right and I didn't think I would be able to do that well with transfer tape.

So I used another trick that I had up my sleeve...

I placed the chalkboard vinyl just how I wanted it on the board. Then I used masking tape to tape the top edge of the vinyl down.

I lifted the vinyl up and carefully peeled the backing paper off of the vinyl.

And then I carefully adhered the chalkboard vinyl to the board, rubbing it as a I laid it down.

It was placed absolutely perfectly! Hurray!

I cut "{days until}" out of my lighter colored vinyl and using transfer paper I adhered this to the chalkboard vinyl.

My board turned out better then I imagined it! And my daughter loves being able to count down to every holiday!

So I want to know, do you have a special way to countdown to holidays?
