Etched Glass Sidelight Subway Art

Etched Glass Sidelight Subway Art

Hello wonderful Expressions Vinyl blog followers! I am Ashley from Simply Designing (a craft and design blog), and am so happy to be here today to show off a really fun vinyl project!

I have been feeling real antsy to try my hand at using the Dusted Crystal (aka Etched Glass) vinyl. So I decided to tackle a big project this weekend and am so excited to share it with you.

By our front door we have a sidelight (one of those long skinny windows). I love it for so many reasons and I love the amount of light that comes pouring in through that window in the morning. But I don't love the lack of privacy. Then the idea came to put that fabulous dusted crystal vinyl together with my sidelight and I couldn't wait to test this out!

I decided to make seasonal "art" for the sidelight. Something that would be fun now, but would be easy and inexpensive to change come fall. So I started playing around and decided to fill all five sections of my sidelight with Summer Subway Word Art!

After I had everything ready to cut in my Silhouette software program, I turned the speed way down (since I knew I would have a lot of small words to cut out) and got to cutting.

(I apologize in advance for the not-so-great photos...it is really hard to take a good photo of the dusted crystal vinyl especially on a window!)

Next I weeded the vinyl. (Weeding is where you remove the excess vinyl.) Now, I will be honest, I don't know if it was due to the fact that this was a very detailed project or if it is because this vinyl is a bit different then typical vinyl, but weeding it took a bit more time and patience. But it all came off!

Then I used my transfer paper and applied it to each section of my sidelight window!

Ooohhh! This is so much fun!! I absolutely love it! I wish you could all come to my house to see it because it looks far better in person then it does in these photos.

And PS - in case you are wondering, I actually cut a mirror image of the subway art and applied it to the inside of my windows. That way it is visible in the correct direction from the outside but also out the way of any bad weather outside. Having said that, in order to take photos where you could see anything besides my reflection, I took these images on the inside, played with the contrast, and "mirrored" them so you could view and read them! Whew! Thank you Photoshop!

I really enjoyed working with the dusted crystal vinyl though, and I LOOOOOVE how my sidelight windows turned out! I still get tons of light pouring in the window, but I get a bit of privacy as well!

What would you make with Dusted Crystal vinyl?
