How To Avoid Tearing Your Vinyl In The Weeding Process

Hey guys, it's Jessica with ExpressionsVinyl.com, and today I want to show you how to avoid tearing your heat transfer vinyl (HTV) when it hasn't cut quite deep enough or if the vinyl's just being tricky to work with.

I have our Jade Siser Glitter (don't you just LOVE this color?!), and I think on this one my machine didn't quite cut deep enough. But it is a big piece of vinyl, and this stuff isn't particularly cheap, so I didn't want to let it go to waste.

So, one thing you can do is familiarize yourself with where your weed lines should be. If you bend the vinyl, you can see where it's cut. I have a section that didn't get cut quite deep enough.

I'm just going to run my blade over that section...in case you are new to my blog, I have a deep affection for utility knives...but any Xacto knife or even scissors would work, just use whatever you have.

Just slowly go around where your lines should be and make sure that it is cut all the way though the vinyl, trying not to cut into your clear carrier sheet.

Then slowly peel away each section. Again, make sure you're familiar with your design, and don't be worried if the vinyl peels away in little chunks.

Another great way to avoid tearing your vinyl is to cut as you go so that you are only dealing with smaller pieces. Simply take your knife and slice away the excess vinyl as you work your way around your design.

Unfortunately, the very best advice I can give you when weeding HTV is to have PATIENCE and GO REALLY SLOOOWW. With these tips and some patience, you can avoid tearing your vinyl or messing up the letters when you're weeding heat transfer vinyl.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know in the comments below. And make sure to watch the full video of these tips here!
