How To Customize Your Silhouette Cut Settings

Customizing Silhouette Cut Settings in V3

Hi guys, it's Starla with Expressions Vinyl and today I'm going show you, how to program your Cut Settings in the Silhouette Studio.

There is nothing more frustrating that having to guess what the cut settings are from vinyl to vinyl, so we are going to show you how to set that perfect setting for your vinyl and eliminate the guessing game on settings.

Let's go ahead and look at the default settings.

When you go into the program and you select the very top, it'll say Commonly Used Products, when you select the default Vinyl option, it will default to this setting, which is a blade setting of one, speed of a three and a thickness of seven. This is the typical setting for Silhouette Brand Vinyl, so we may need to adjust it some and we want to save that adjustment for future use.

We've gone ahead and cut out our Blue Reflective Vinyl and our Oracal 651 Black with the Silhouette default setting.

We are going to see how they compare because some vinyl brands are thinner and some a little bit thicker, so let's see how the 651 does.

It's a pretty decent cut for just regular. This will vary from machine to machine as well so keep that in mind if this setting does not work for you.

Now let's move onto our Reflective. This is a thicker material so I do not expect it to cut the same, but in vinyl lines the colors can vary as well.

It did cut but it did not cut quite deep enough, There is slight line where the blade when though. You can kind of force weed it but you want a nice clean lift when weeding the vinyl.

Reflective tends to rip a little bit, so you want a good clean cut.

Now we will go in and try out our custom settings. (Tool 1 or Tool 2)

In the Silhouette program, select the tool you wish to use.

If you have the Cameo two, that won't matter. The Cameo three you must select your tool. Since we don't want to use that default setting, we will create our own settings that we can just refer to every time we need to cut Reflective.

You will notice some plus or minus symbols next to the pre-programmed settings. This is where you will begin your custom settings.

Start by selecting the plus symbol and we are going to name this EV Reflective, you can name and rename this to your liking. Don't hit enter quite yet because you want to adjust your settings.

On the website near the top of the page, you will see a selection titled Machine Settings, this is where you can access all our our recommended settings for the vinyl that ExpressionsVinyl.com carries.

According to the chart the Reflective Vinyl is recommended to be set at a two on. Since we're using the auto blade, we want to change that as well.

Speed can vary depending upon the detail of the cut, I'm going to do it a little bit faster just because we have a pretty simple shape and our recommended speed is a 7. While our thickness is a 10.

If you notice, the cursor where you titled this setting is still blinking which is

indicating that it's not been saved yet, so hit enter. You should now have your first saved cut setting for Reflective Vinyl.

Once that's blued, you are good to go. So now you can change back and forth between your other settings and it'll know it right away.

Also, once you have saved on tool 1, it will automatically save to the tool 2.

We are now ready to load the vinyl and cut.

That was a much easier cut. It still lifted a little bit but it is a much easier cut.

So go ahead and play with your settings or go off of our cut chart, just go on the website and select Machine Settings and select your machine.

Another benefit to setting your Custom Settings is the program, is that is makes it very easy to monitor your blade for when it becomes dull, you will find yourself changing settings quite frequently, which is a good indicator for a new blade.

We hope you found this information helpful and if you have any questions leave them below, we would love to hear from you!
