Layered Vinyl On A Curved Surface

Layered Vinyl On A Curved Surface

It's Jessica here from Expressionsvinyl.com! Today I want to show you how to put layered vinyl on a round ornament! If you have ever tried this you know it can be tricky! But don't worry because I have tips and tricks for you!

An ornament has a compound curve. It has curves up and down and side to side --which means putting vinyl on it can be tough. Sometimes you get ridges and it doesn't want to lay nice and flat.Or it buckles and you lose part of your design!

So I've got some tricks to make it an easier process!

Without getting two technical, there are two different kinds of vinyl. There's cast vinyl and calendared vinyl. Calendared vinyl is mostly what is used in the craft industry. Our glitter vinyl is a cast vinyl and will go around those compound curves nicely and lay down like it should. You don't HAVE to use glitter vinyl on an ornament but it is helpful.

When you are designing, you will want to pay attention to your design. If you do a big solid circle on a round surface it will not lay flat. But if you make it smaller circle so it has less to go around it will work better. Also if you have a flowy font or open design it will be easier.

The most important thing to do is layer your vinyl before you put it on your ornament. Start by cutting out your design with a weeding box. Both layers will have a box around them the same size.

Lay over your Transfer Tape on the top layer and trim around it-- careful not to cut any of the backing.

Then just take the edge of my transfer tape and line them up with the edge of my next layer. Peel off the backing and layer my vinyl on.

Grab your ornament and make sure it's nice and clean. A clorox wipe works great! Now you are ready to put your vinyl on! I'm going to peel my transfer tape and vinyl off the backing. And we are just going to place it in the middle--we don't want to lay it totally down yet. Get the middle stuck and then go towards the top.

Then we are going to peel off our transfer tape.

And use our finger to lay the rest of the vinyl down so we don't get any wrinkles or bubbles. Don't be afraid to peel it back up and get those bubbles out.

And that is how you put layered vinyl on a curved ornament!

If you are still intimated by putting vinyl on ornaments you can try these flat ones. They still have a curve but not as bad as the round ones so you can cheat a little bit!

If you have an questions leave them for us down below!
